Each of us has been called by God to do something great in this life. There is a saying “God does not call the qualified, He qualifies the called.” This should be great news for each of us, however I believe we all have this feeling that we must be fully qualified, educated and prepared before God can use us. Yes education is very important but the truth is some of the most spiritually influential people in ministry today have never stepped foot in a seminary in their lives.
Calling is something that I believe a lot of people struggle with. What am I called to do? Where is God calling me to go? Who is God calling me to be? Truth be told I think we have all asked God at some point what our calling is.
It has been my experience that when I feel like I hear from God then Satan immediately goes to work to contradict what it is that I felt like I heard God saying. He will say things like “you are qualified to do that” or “who do you think you are to be doing that?” The one that Satan uses the most on me is “with your past, what makes you think you have credibility anyway.” Satan loves to use my past against me. But here is a little secret, God loves to use my past for me to build his kingdom. Someone once said, “Facts tell, stories sell.” This is partially why we give a testimony of how God takes nothing and makes something.
The following are three steps you can use to discern your calling in life:
- What is the most burning desire that you have in your life? God plants desires in us that I believe He wants to fulfill in us and through us. The Bible says in Psalms 37:4 “Take delight in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart.” When God gives you your desires they line up with His and when we walk intimately with him then it’s his desire to fulfill our desires.
- What gifts has God given you that just seem to come natural? There are certain things in your life that you do that just comes natural. Most my life I have had people of all ages come to me feeling free to open up and share whatever it is going on in their life. I believe God has given me a unique ability to listen to others, empower them to excel at a level that they never thought possible and encourage them to reach any goal. This is what makes me good at being a life coach.
- When moving in a direction that you feel called by God to move, Satan will do everything he can to distance you from those you love and the things you desire most in your calling. This is just one of Satan’s tactics; distance. He knows that if he can pull you away that you may get discouraged and just walk away all together. Don’t let him win the battle.
It may be that God is calling you to do something so big that you know it’s impossible in your own strength to accomplish or He may be calling you right now just to come back to him and restore your relationship. Whatever it is that He is calling you to do one thing I know for sure is that if you choose not to accept the assignment, you will be miserable. Allow God to work in and through you.
